Experience News in a New Way
Imagine going on a month-long road trip. What if your riding partner is your spouse?
For one Australian couple, the road is their playground.
“We’re very excited we’re about to embark on an epic drive through us 48 states,” said Helen Taylor, half of the world most fuel efficient couple.
For 30 years Helen and John Taylor have been smashing world fuel economy and speed records.
“We actually did a drive around the world together,” said Helen, “so 78 days in a car, husband and wife driving 14-16 hours a day.”
They had to be at each other’s throats by the end of that trip.
“That lady, my wife, she gave me the best 78 days of my life,” John said. “I absolutely love her to bits If I could spend 24 hours a day with her for the rest of my life I`m going to be the happiest man on the planet.”
He just won mega brownie points with that answer. Now the couple is fueling for more. They’re starting a 23-day journey beginning in Houston and attempting to beat the hybrid fuel economy record.
“The current record stands at about 65 miles per gallon and we think we can better that,” Helen said.
Their ultimate goal is to change the way people drive and think about fuel efficiency.
“It’s great to break a world record,” said John, “but it’s also about showing that even driving a hybrid car we can go out there and achieve phenomenal figures by just driving under the legal speed limit and by planning the route correctly so we don’t get lost.”
