Baboons can read, kinda

It’s scientifically proven, primates are incredibly smart! That is, until you see something like the viral video of the monkey smelling his finger and falling out of a tree, then you may begin to question just how intellectual these primates could really be.

Psychologist Jonathan Grainger, of France’s National Centre for Scientific Research, discovered some pretty baffling baboon capabilities that may restore your faith. Through several experiments, Grainger found out baboons can recognize and distinguish a few dozen four-letter words. One baboon in the study was able to learn 308!

The baboons aren’t attaching meaning to the words, so they’re not technically reading. However, the study shows that in the same way kids learn the sounds of their ABC’s before beginning to read, the ability to recognize word shapes and lengths plays a strong role in literacy.

So, maybe zoos should consider posting don’t throw your feces signs around the primate exhibits, and begin to hold these ‘surprisingly-smart’ animals to a higher standard!!
