NASA wants your help in finding asteroids

If you ever wanted to work for NASA, here’s your chance. Just don’t expect to get paid.

NASA needs your help, if you’re an amateur astronomer.

Your task, find near earth objects, asteroids. Help characterize these NEO’s, their position, motion, rotation and intensity of the light they emit.

The project is called ‘Target Asteroids’, and will support NASA’s Origins Interpretation Resource Identification Security – Regolith Explorer, yeah, we don’t know what any of that means either, but it’s some kind of spacecraft they call OSIRIS-REx for short.

OSIRIS-REx is scheduled to launch in 2016 and will hook up with an asteroid called 1999 RQ36 in 2019. It’s supposed to come back to earth in 2023 with all kinds of new information about the asteroid, which will then be compared with the information gathered from all the amateur sky gazers. All that is supposed to give the experts some kind of understanding about asteroids.

All we really want to know is…should we be worried one of these things is headed our way?
