Texas bans calculators in math classes

What was your favorite class in school? Art, recess, and lunch are always popular answers. Math usually falls at the bottom of the list.

So, a move by Texas’ State Board of Education to get calculators taken out of Kindergarten through 5th grade math classes probably won’t be one of the most popular initiatives this year.

The new curriculum standards that will take effect in the 2014-15 school years are designed to be “more rigorous” and encourage kids to learn the “basics” without depending on calculators. One state board of education member says school-kids should learn to work math problems “the old fashioned way” — on paper.

Haven’t schools been phasing out cursive writing because technology makes it useless? In a society that literally depends on technology to operate, how is math any different?

Besides, who really does math without the help of a calculator or an iPhone these days?
