Experience News in a New Way

Watch winds whip jetliners across runway

The rains in Spain may stay mainly on the plain, but we could also say the planes in Spain stayed mainly off the plain.

That’s because some wicked winds at the Bilbao, Spain, airport turned normally routine landings into barf-bag experiences. Yeah, we all like our planes to go up and to come down, but we only want it to happen once during a flight, not several times during a landing. And never do we like it when our planes go side-to-side.

But that’s what happened to some flights coming into the airport. Videos show some pretty harrowing landings and aborted landings.

In all, air controllers only diverted four flights, and those that landed did so safely.
