Experience News in a New Way
She was dressed to the nines, or so Texanna Edwards thought until she and her date were “dressed down” at the Gibson High School Prom in Memphis, TN.
She was told, “Ya’ll will have to leave ‘cause the dress is inappropriate.”
The dress in question is a confederate flag, compete with matching necklace, which Texanna designed just for the prom.
Texanna is white but her African-American classmates agreed with her wearing the dress saying, “Other people wear stuff to school every day that has that symbol on it but they don’t get kicked out of school on a daily basis for it.” Another said, “It was heritage, not hate. She didn’t go in there to make nobody upset or nothing like that.”
It’s shocking to see African-Americans supporting a flag that was — and still is — the symbol for black oppression.
