Experience News in a New Way
Amid the colorful fashions and the flowing booze at this weekend’s Kentucky Derby that saw ‘I’ll Have Another’ beat the long odds to take the 138th run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Kentucky, someone may have had murder on his mind.
Like the plot of a Dick Francis mystery, a Guatemalan man turned up dead in the barn area of Churchill Downs, about 150 yards from the barn of this year’s derby winner.
The 48-year-old Adan Perez worked as a groom. His 19-year-old son identified the body. He also works at the track.
There is a report that Perez was in a fight early Sunday morning. Police say it’s possible someone murdered him, but they haven’t decided yet.
About 200 people work in the backside of Churchill Downs, an area like a little city with about 50 barns, dormitories for workers, and living areas for trainers.
The only witness may be a horse, but unlike Mr. Ed, this one probably won’t be talking.
