DMV denies vegan’s ILVTOFU license plate request

Vanity license plates are a fun way to personalize your car. A way to let other motorists know who you are.

But when 26-year-old Whitney Calk requested a custom plate from Tennessee, touting her love of tofu, the vegetarian was denied! Why? Because the state felt having “I love tofu” or “I-L-V-T-O-F-U” as would be printed on her plates might be interpreted the wrong way.

In fact, battles between the states and their drivers to keep roadways clear of offensive phrases are going on all the time.

Virginia, the state with the highest custom plate shenanigans, denied more than 700 tags deemed a little too racy in 2009.

Requests are even looked at upside-down and sometimes through mirrors to see if there’s a secret meaning the motorists are trying to sneak by the state.
